Sunscreens Exposed: 9 surprising truths

Sunscreens prevent sunburns, but beyond that simple fact surprisingly little is known about the safety and efficacy of these ubiquitous creams and sprays. FDA’s failure to finalize its 1978 sunscreen safety standards both epitomizes and perpetuates this state of confusion. EWG’s review of the latest research unearthed troubling facts that might tempt you to give up on sunscreens altogether. That’s not the right answer – despite the unknowns about their efficacy, public health agencies still recommend using sunscreens, just not as your first line of defense against the sun. At EWG we use sunscreens, but we look for shade, wear protective clothing and avoid the noontime sun before we smear on the cream. Here are the surprising facts:

1. There’s no consensus on whether sunscreens prevent skin cancer.

The Food and Drug Administration’s 2007 draft sunscreen safety regulations say: “FDA is not aware of data demonstrating that sunscreen use alone helps prevent skin cancer” (FDA 2007). The International Agency for Research on Cancer agrees. IARC recommends clothing, hats and shade as primary barriers to UV radiation and writes that “sunscreens should not be the first choice for skin cancer prevention and should not be used as the sole agent for protection against the sun” (IARC 2001a). 2. There’s some evidence that sunscreens might increase the risk of the deadliest form of skin cancer for some people.

Some researchers have detected an increased risk of melanoma among sunscreen users. No one knows the cause, but scientists speculate that sunscreen users stay out in the sun longer and absorb more radiation overall, or that free radicals released as sunscreen chemicals break down in sunlight may play a role. One other hunch: Inferior sunscreens with poor UVA protection that have dominated the market for 30 years may have led to this surprising outcome. All major public health agencies still advise using sunscreens, but they also stress the importance of shade, clothing and timing. Read more.

3. There are more high SPF products than ever before, but no proof that they’re better.

In 2007 the FDA published draft regulations that would prohibit companies from labeling sunscreens with an SPF (sun protection factor) higher than “SPF 50+.” The agency wrote that higher values were “inherently misleading,” given that “there is no assurance that the specific values themselves are in fact truthful…” (FDA 2007). Scientists are also worried that high-SPF products may tempt people to stay in the sun too long, suppressing sunburns (a late, key warning of overexposure) while upping the risks of other kinds of skin damage.

Flaunting FDA’s proposed regulation, companies substantially increased their high-SPF offerings in 2011. Nearly one in five products now lists SPF values higher than “50+”, compared to only one in eight in 2009, according to EWG’s analysis of more than 600 beach and sport sunscreens. Among the worst offenders are Walgreens and CVS stores and Neutrogena. Walgreens’ boasts of SPF higher than “50+” on nearly half of its sunscreens; CVS and Neutrogena make the same misleading claim on about a third of theirs. Read more.

4. Too little sun might be harmful, reducing the body’s vitamin D levels.

Adding to the confusion is the fact that sunshine serves a critical function in the body that sunscreen appears to inhibit — production of vitamin D. The main source of vitamin D in the body is sunshine, and the compound is enormously important to health – it strengthens bones and the immune system, reduces the risk of various cancers (including breast, colon, kidney, and ovarian cancers) and regulates at least 1,000 different genes governing virtually every tissue in the body (Mead 2008). Over the last two decades, vitamin D levels in the U.S. population have been decreasing steadily, creating a “growing epidemic of vitamin D insufficiency” (Ginde 2009a). Seven of every 10 U.S. children now have low levels. Those most likely to be deficient include children who are obese or who spend more than four hours daily in front of the TV, computer or video games (Kumar 2009).

Experts disagree on the solution. The American Medical Association has recommended 10 minutes of direct sun (without sunscreen) several times a week (AMA 2008), while the American Academy of Dermatology holds that “there is no scientifically validated, safe threshold level of UV exposure from the sun that allows for maximal vitamin D synthesis without increasing skin cancer risk” (AAD 2009). Vitamin D supplements are the alternative, but there is debate over the proper amount. The Institute of Medicine has launched new research to reassess the current guidelines. In the meantime, your doctor can test your vitamin D levels and give advice on sunshine versus supplements. Read more.

5. The common sunscreen ingredient vitamin A may speed the development of cancer.

Recently available data from an FDA study indicate that a form of vitamin A, retinyl palmitate, when applied to the skin in the presence of sunlight, may speed the development of skin tumors and lesions (NTP 2009). This evidence is troubling because the sunscreen industry adds vitamin A to 30 percent of all sunscreens.

The industry puts vitamin A in its formulations because it is an anti-oxidant that slows skin aging. That may be true for lotions and night creams used indoors, but FDA recently conducted a study of vitamin A’s photocarcinogenic properties, the possibility that it results in cancerous tumors when used on skin exposed to sunlight. Scientists have known for some time that vitamin A can spur excess skin growth (hyperplasia), and that in sunlight it can form free radicals that damage DNA (NTP 2000).

In FDA’s one-year study, tumors and lesions developed up to 21 percent sooner in lab animals coated in a vitamin A-laced cream (at a concentration of 0.5%) than animals treated with a vitamin-free cream. Both groups were exposed to the equivalent of just nine minutes of maximum intensity sunlight each day.

It’s an ironic twist for an industry already battling studies on whether their products protect against skin cancer. The FDA data are preliminary, but if they hold up in the final assessment, the sunscreen industry has a big problem. In the meantime, EWG recommends that consumers avoid sunscreens with vitamin A (look for “retinyl palmitate” or “retinol” on the label). Read more.

6. Free radicals and other skin-damaging byproducts of sunscreen.

Both UV radiation and many common sunscreen ingredients generate free radicals that damage DNA and skin cells, accelerate skin aging and cause skin cancer. An effective sunscreen prevents more damage than it causes, but sunscreens are far better at preventing sunburn than at limiting free radical damage. While typical SPF ratings for sunburn protection range from 15 to 50, equivalent “free radical protection factors” fall at only about 2. When consumers apply too little sunscreen or reapply it infrequently, behaviors that are more common than not, sunscreens can cause more free radical damage than UV rays on bare skin. Read more.

7. Pick your sunscreen: nanomaterials or potential hormone disruptors.

The ideal sunscreen would completely block the UV rays that cause sunburn, immune suppression and damaging free radicals. It would remain effective on the skin for several hours and not form harmful ingredients when degraded by UV light. It would smell and feel pleasant so that people use it in the right amount and frequency.

Unsurprisingly, there is currently no sunscreen that meets all of these criteria. The major choice in the U.S. is between “chemical” sunscreens, which have inferior stability, penetrate the skin and may disrupt the body’s hormone systems, and “mineral” sunscreens (zinc and titanium), which often contain micronized- or nano-scale particles of those minerals.

After reviewing the evidence, EWG determined that mineral sunscreens have the best safety profile of today’s choices. They are stable in sunlight and do not appear to penetrate the skin. They offer UVA protection, which is sorely lacking in most of today’s sunscreen products. Mexoryl SX (ecamsule) is another good option, but it’s sold in very few formulations. Tinosorb S and M could be great solutions but are not yet available in the U.S. For consumers who don’t like mineral products, we recommend sunscreens with avobenzone (3 percent for the best UVA protection) and without the notorious hormone disruptors oxybenzone or 4-MBC. Scientists have called for parents to avoid using oxybenzone on children due to penetration and toxicity concerns. Read more.

8. Europe’s better sunscreens.

Sunscreen makers and users in Europe have more options than in the United States. In Europe, sunscreen makers can select from among 27 chemicals for their formulations, compared to 17 in the U.S. Companies selling in Europe can add any of seven UVA filters to their products, but have a choice of only three when they market in the U.S. European sunscreens could earn FDA’s proposed four-star top rating for UVA protection, while the best U.S. products would earn only three stars. Sunscreen chemicals approved in Europe but not by the FDA provide up to five times more UVA protection; U.S. companies have been waiting five years for FDA approval to use the same compounds. Last but not least, Europeans will find many sunscreens with strong (mandatory) UVA protection if proposed regulations in Europe are finalized. Under FDA’s current proposal, Americans will not. 9. The 34th summer in a row without final U.S. sunscreen safety regulations.

In the United States, consumer protection has stalled because of the FDA’s 33-year effort to set enforceable guidelines for consumer protection. EWG has found a number of serious problems with existing sunscreens, including overstated claims about their perfomance and inadequate UVA protection. Many of these will be remedied if and when the FDA’s proposed sunscreen rule takes effect. But even after the rule is enacted, gaps will remain. FDA does not consider serious toxicity concerns such as hormone disruption when approving new sun filters. The new rules would also still allow sunscreen makers to use ingredients like vitamin A that can damage the skin in sunlight, and would fail to require makers to measure sunscreen stability despite ample evidence that many products break down quickly in sunlight. Getting to the shady side of the street

A structure that creates shade can add value to a home and make outdoor living spaces more comfortable. Choices vary widely in functionality and cost.

One option is tensioned fabric panels, sometimes called shade sails, that can be suspended over a pool or patio in different configurations.

"It allows you to put shade where you couldn't with a regular awning," says Brian Ross, owner of Smart Shade Solutions in Fort Lauderdale.

The fabric often used for such panels is a knitted polyethylene. Each piece of fabric can be up to 35 feet in length from point to point. It is often attached to support structures using turnbuckles and clips, similar to the way in which a sail is attached to a boat.

Ross often attaches the panels to trees growing in the yard. "If there are no trees, then we put in poles," he says. "But that adds to the cost."

Wood poles are the least expensive, costing about $40 for one the is 12 feet high, Ross says. Similarly sized poles made of aluminum or steel run about $200 each. While the steel is stronger, aluminum is less likely to rust.

Margueritte Ramos of ShadeFla in Miami, says the commercial grade sail panels her company offers should always be attached to concrete walls or poles, not trees. A stainless steel cable runs through each panel, and if it is attached to a palm, it may cause the tree to break when a wind blows. "There's a kite effect when the wind gets under the fabric, and what you attach it to has to be strong enough to support it," she says.

Poles, which require large footers, account for much of the cost of the structures, Ramos says. Using poles of different heights allows the installer to increase functionality, as well as create artistic looks.

"You want high and low points," Ramos says. "They're based on where the sun is at different times of the day for shade, but it's also for drama. Having high and low points can look fabulous."

Both Smart Shade Solutions and ShadeFla offer 10-year warranties on the sail fabrics, which cost from $4 to $5 per square foot. They come in a variety of colors, block more than 90 percent of UV rays and are resistant to fading.

"They're knitted rather than a solid piece of fabric, so they allow hot air to rise through them," Ross says. "They can lower the temperature 10 to 15 degrees."

The sail shade fabrics are porous enough so someone underneath can see through them. "But you can't see in from the outside," Ross says. The fabrics don't offer much protection from rain. "It's like standing under a large shade tree," Ramos says. "If it's just a light rain, it will take awhile for you to get wet. But if it's pouring, you'll want to go inside."

When a hurricane threatens, the fabric panels need to be removed. "A homeowner can get them down easily," Ross says.

Because the panels are tensioned, however, getting them back up again can be a bit more difficult. "It takes more yanking power," Ross says.

A variety of other options can also create shade in the yard. The simplest and least expensive is an umbrella. Free standing umbrellas are available at stores like Crate and Barrel, Pottery Barn and Home Depot.

Commercial grade umbrellas may be more expensive, but may also handle inclement weather better. A 13 by 13 foot commercial grade umbrella with base can cost about $900 at ShadeFla. "A high wind umbrella can hold up to winds of 75 miles per hour," Ramos says.

A traditional canopy made from canvas or vinyl and supported by a steel frame can cost $11 to $14 per square foot. "You can add curtains to make it look like an outdoor living room," Ramos says.

A retractable arm canopy is easy to raise and lower. It costs from $2,500 to $7,000 installed. "You attach it to a concrete wall, and it rolls up so it looks like a tube," Ramos says.

One of the most expensive shade options is a self retracting sail. It is made of lightweight canvas with an aluminum shaft running down the middle. When the wind exceeds 25 miles per hour, the fabric automatically retracts and wraps around the central shaft, making it a convenient choice for part time residents who may be away from home when storms threaten. The price ranges from $24,000 to $30,000. "You can attach it to walls, or it can be freestanding," Ramos says. The cost depends on the number of columns you need."

These installations are among the first for ShadeFla in the Colorado area.

The sails are both Sun Square retractable systems and are custom made. One sail is located in an outdoor patio area on the first floor of the residence. Shade 101: What you need to know this summer!

I know school's out for the summer, but we can all use a lesson on sun protection to get ready to fully enjoy what this summer weather has to offer! So, come in, take a seat and welcome to Shade 101, your guide to sun protection, especially for this summer season. Education about sun protection is becoming very important as continuing research proves that overexposure to UV rays can have a detrimental effect on our skin.
All of us need to be more aware as to how we can help protect ourselves, especially when we want to spend endless hours outside. Well, for starters, that may be the beginning of our problem. One important thing to do is to try to limit your time outside. It is suggested not to spend more than 15 to 20 minutes at a time outside. However, most of you won't take heed to this rule. Therefore, it is even more important to take note of the following suggestions.
Skin damage can be avoided depending on the type of clothing you wear. For example, a long sleeved shirt can help protect your arms from unnecessary sun exposure and long pants can help protect your legs. In addition, wearing this type of clothing is a more reliable form of sun protection than sunscreen. Sometimes sunscreen isn't applied as it should be, we occasionally miss some spots when applying sunscreen or we just don't put enough of it on! Sunscreen can also wash off or just rub off leaving your skin unprotected. But, if you are wearing the right clothes, then all those worries don't apply, and you won't even get a sunburn at all. These protective garments cover an entire area leaving nothing unprotected, besides in the long run, a long sleeved shirt and a pair of pants come out cheaper than buying bottle after bottle of sunscreen!
Another important rule is wear a hat when outdoors! Hats not only look cool and add some style to your outfit, but they also protect your face and neck from overexposure to the sun. Buy a hat with your favorite sports team logo on it or just get a hat in your favorite color. There are so many different kinds of hats to choose from that it is certain you will find one that matches your personality and style. But whatever kind of hat it is, just wear it when you are outdoors and your face will be shielded.
If you want to add even more style to your outfit, wear a pair of sunglasses! Sunglasses shield your eyes from those UV rays too and some research shows that those UV rays give rise to cataracts, an eye disease. Therefore, it is just as important to protect your eyes from the sun as well!
Now that we have the dress code covered for summer, here are a few other rules to help protect yourself from the sun!
If you're looking for the best time to play outdoors, research shows that the sun is less strong either before 10am or after 4pm. Therefore, try to plan your outdoor activites around that schedule to promote healthy sun exposure.

Everyone knows that kids love being outdoors and playing outside! Kids enjoy playing on slides, swing sets, and hanging on monkey bars, and even occasionally befriending any icky bugs they may find during their outdoor adventure! And, when summer comes around, kids really get excited swimming and splashing around in the pool and building sand castles at the beach! Although, their sand castles almost always get washed up by a wave,they usually don't mind starting over and building bigger and better ones! For children, the outdoors is a playground of excitement and adventure that allows children to expand their imagination and develop adaptive skills early on in their life! Not to mention, being outdoors exposes children to a daily dose of vitamin D, a healthy and necessary component for growing and maintaining strong bones. Although a good amount of vitamin D from the sun is recommended, too much of it can be a problem! Like anything taken without moderation, too much exposure to the sun can damage skin. It is even reported that 80% of skin damage occurs in the first twenty years of life. This means that finding a solution to too much sun exposure is a must, especially for children that have yet to reach 20 years old!

It’s finally summertime! During this time, there are so many outdoor activities that we like to enjoy. How many of you like to spend the summer season outside at a park, in the pool or at the beach, soaking in the sun? I bet there are a lot of you! Now, how many of you immerse yourselves in sunscreen before enjoying any of these outdoor activities? I can probably guess that not many of you do this. And, if you do, I can probably bet that you do not re-apply sunscreen after dabbing on that first amount. Herein lays the problem. Many of you probably don’t know but, skin cancer is on the rise. And even more discouraging, it seems that most individuals feel unsusceptible to the damaging effects of the sun. This is especially true for children who are not seen as candidates for skin cancer because of their young age. However, skin cancer is becoming more and more common, especially early on in our lives. Nowadays, children spend more time outside, playing sports, spending time in the pool or hanging out on the beach, which means they are being exposed to the harmful effects of the sun frequently. Although these activities promote health through exercise, they also invite damaging carcinogens to spread and destroy cells that keep our skin healthy and cancer-free. But aside from that how many of you wish you could stay outdoors longer but feel tired and weak because of the harsh heat? I know, especially in South Florida, we all wish we could stay out enjoying the sun all day!

Not to be the bearer of bad news and the destructive force of all outdoor fun in the sun this summer, I do have a solution. It was not too long ago that I was the PTA Vice President of Fundraising at my daughter’s school and we were on a mission to make the playground area more accessible to the children. Her school had a playground set that could not be used regularly because the harsh sunlight would make the equipment too hot to touch and consequently too dangerous for the children’s use. We couldn't do without the sun. It keeps us warm, fuels photosynthesis so we have spinach to eat and helps our bodies make vitamin D. We couldn't see across the street without the sun.

But it also has a dark side. If we fly too close to Old Sol, for too long, on a beach, pool or tennis court, its UVB rays penetrate the top layers of our skin, causing sunburn. Its longer UVA rays penetrate the dermis, the next layer down, causing wrinkles, age spots and, too often, skin cancer.

Do we even dare sunbathe these days? We asked the experts.

SUNSCREENS AND SPF

Q: Will sunscreens protect me?

A: They can help, the FDA says. But take their label claims with a large grain of salt. The FDA has been trying since 1999 to get sunscreen makers to stop using what it calls 'unsupported, absolute and/or misleading and confusing terms such as `sunblock,' 'waterproof' '' and others. Some brands say ''waterproof'' on their front label even though their back labels say, ''Rinse with water to remove.'' So don't count on ''sunblock'' to block the sun, and don't count on ''waterproof'' products to stay on in the water. Be sure to reapply often.

Q: What SPF should I use?

A: You need an SPF (sun protection factor) of at least 15, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. Dr. Jonette Keri, a dermatologist at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, recommends an SPF of at least 30 if you're at the beach, pool or tennis court. ''Most people don't put on enough,'' she says. It takes two shot glasses of lotion to cover the average bather, and most people put on only about half that amount. So the higher SPF can help. ''The higher the better,'' she says.

Q: Is SPF the only factor I should consider?

A: No. An SPF rating measures a sunscreen's protection against UVB (ultraviolet B) rays but not against UVA (ultraviolet A) rays, which can also cause wrinkles and skin cancer. For UVA ray protection, check the sunscreen label for the ingredient avobenzone or mexoryl.

Q: When should I apply sunscreen?

A: Apply 30 minutes before getting into the sun so your skin can soak up your sunscreen, and reapply every 90 minutes -- more often if you go in the water, sweat a lot or towel off.

Q: Can I put sunscreen on my baby?

A: Sunscreen is OK after about 6 months of age, Keri says. Still, keep Snookums out of the sun as much as possible, and re-apply often.

Q: What about younger than 6 months?

A: If you must take an infant to the beach, keep him or her in a stroller and use a ''baby sun protective cover'' with a UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) rating.

AT THE BEACH

Q: Is it safe to go to the beach?

A: ''I want my patients to have fun and go to the beach, but they should protect themselves as much as they can,'' says Keri. Wear sunscreen when you go in the water. When you get out, get under an umbrella.

Q: I can't lie out in the sun with my trashy novel?

''I don't want you to do that,'' says Keri. ``People have in mind that a tan is healthy. It's not. We [dermatologists] are trying to change the culture -- get people not to go out and lie in the sun to get a tan. We know a lot more about ultraviolet radiation than we used to. I think most of my colleagues would agree.''

Q: Can I hit the beach at any time of day?

A: Seek shade between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., the Skin Cancer Foundation says.

Q: Is it safe to lie under a beach umbrella?

A: It helps. But don't forget you still get sunlight reflected off the water, so keep using sunscreen, Keri says.

EVERYDAY NOTIONS

Q: Does it help to toss on a T-shirt when I come out of the water?

A: Very little, says Keri. A white T-shirt has an SPF of only about 3, she says. But you can buy sun-protective swimwear, coverups, hats, even long-sleeve shirts and pants. The clothing is impregnated with zinc oxide or titanium oxide, the same ingredients in many sunscreens. While sunscreen is measured in SPF (sun protection factor), clothing is rated in UPF (ultraviolet protection factor). Try stores like Target, Kmart and Walmart or Google ``sun protective clothing.''

Q: Can dark-skinned people get sunburns?

A: Dark-skinned people are less susceptible because the melanin that gives their skin its color absorbs UV radiation, Keri says, ``but they can still burn.''

Q: What about tanning lotions that bronze the skin?

A: They're OK, Keri says, as long as the active ingredient is dihydroxyacetone (or DHA), which reacts with dead cells on your skin to turn you tan. But the tan you get gives you protection up to only an SPF of 3, so it won't help much against the real sun. Some tanning creams include protective ingredients with SPFs of 15 or higher. But that lasts only about 90 minutes, not the duration of the tan, which is usually about five days.

Q: Can I get a safe tan at a tanning salon?

A: The Skin Cancer Foundation warns against them altogether. So does Keri: ''They're just a way to try to convince consumers they're healthy when they're not,'' she says.

Q: I've heard I should wear sunscreen just walking from my house to my car, from my car to my place of work. Can that be true?

A: Keri says yes: ''I apply it in the morning, at lunch and after work.'' Men and women can get makeup and skin lotions with an SPF of at least 15, so use those whenever possible. You might want a little extra on your left arm if it's exposed to the sun while you drive.

Q: I hear the human body needs vitamin D and gets it from unprotected exposure to the sun. Will I get enough if I take so many protective measures?

This is a matter of debate in the medical community. Some doctors, including rheumatologist James Dowd, author of the The Vitamin D Cure,advise at least some unprotected exposure to the sun. The known benefits of vitamin D -- which can be blocked by SPFs rated 8 or higher -- include helping calcium build strong bones, and researchers have looked in the vitamin's role in staving off colon cancer, multiple sclerosis, diabetes and heart disease.

Dermatologists like Keri say the risks of damage from unprotected exposure outweigh the potential benefits, and that vitamin D can be obtained in foods and supplements. Good sources include salmon, mackerel, sardines, fortified milk or cereals like Kashi or Total.

The National Institutes of Health, pointing out that UV radiation is a carcinogen that accumulates over a lifetime, concludes: ``It is not known whether a desirable level of regular sun exposure exists that imposes no (or minimal) risk of skin cancer over time.''

There is no definitive answer, so you may want to consult your doctor.

Q: Should I worry about my pets getting skin cancer?

A: Dogs, cats and even horses suffer from sunburn, solar dermatitis and skin cancer. Sunscreens are actually recommended by the American Animal Hospital Association for some animals. The sunscreen should be fragrance-free, nonstaining and contain UVA and UVB blockers. Because most human sunscreens can be toxic if ingested by a dog or a cat (and they will try to lick it off) it's best to use a pet-specific product. Doggles, Nutri-vet and Epi-Pet all produce pet-specific sunscreens and can be found online.

Protect Yourself from the Sun

Summer is a great time to have fun outdoors. It's also a time to take precautions to avoid sunburns, which can increase your risk of skin cancer.

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. Exposure to the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays appears to be the most important environmental factor involved with developing skin cancer. During the summer months, UV radiation tends to be greater.

To help prevent skin cancer while still having fun outdoors, regularly use sun protective practices such as

Seek shade, especially during midday hours (10 a.m.–4 p.m.), when UV rays are strongest and do the most damage.
Cover up with clothing to protect exposed skin. A long-sleeved shirt and long pants with a tight weave are best.
Get a hat with a wide brim to shade the face, head, ears, and neck.
Grab shades that wrap around and block as close to 100% of both UVA and UVB rays as possible.
Rub on sunscreen with sun protective factor (SPF) 15 or higher, and both UVA and UVB protection.

It's always wise to choose more than one way to cover up when you're in the sun. Use sunscreen and put on a shirt... Seek shade and grab your sunglasses... Wear a hat, but rub on sunscreen too. Combining these sun protective actions helps protect your skin from the sun's damaging UV rays.

UV rays reach you on cloudy and hazy days, as well as bright and sunny days. UV rays will also reflect off any surface like water, cement, sand, and snow. Additionally, UV rays from artificial sources of light, like tanning beds, cause skin cancer and should be avoided.

Most forms of skin cancer can be cured. However, the best way to avoid skin cancer is to protect your skin from the sun. For more information, please visit Basic Information about Skin Cancer and Skin Cancer Questions and Answers.

Protecting Children from the Sun

Just a few serious sunburns can increase your child's risk of skin cancer later in life. Kids don't have to be at the pool, beach, or on vacation to get too much sun. Their skin needs protection from the sun's harmful UV rays whenever they're outdoors. Parents, help your children play it safe in the sun and protect your own skin as well. (Miami, FL). SunSquare Systems retractable sails will be sold in the U.S. by ShadeFla, a local architectural shade company. The sail, a patented system, is a one of a kind system that contains an anemometer (wind sensor) that will automatically retract the sail when winds exceed 30 MPH. A spring mechanism pre-tensions the sail allowing the sail to flex in gusty winds. This product geared for commercial and high end residential, will provide rain and sun protection and allow you to look at the stars at night if you wish!

The product, designed by architect Gerald Wurz, is sleek and modern with stainless steel columns and fittings. The product has over 100 of different components all designed by Wurz and Engineer, Kautzky including spot lights attached to cantilevered arms for indirect illumination of the sails.

The sails extend up to 30 feet and can be cut in a variety of triangular shapes as well as combined for larger spaces. Sun Square uses Sattler fabrics, offering sun protection with the Sattler Solis netting and sun and water protection with the Sattler 321 fabric. The fabric comes in a variety of colors and logos can be printed on the sails. There are also a dozen different shaped column and attachment points allowing each structure to be unique.

Nowadays, it is becoming increasingly necessary to have some form of shade structure to help keep cool and calm even under the hot sun. Lip Balms and Glosses May Boost Skin Cancer Risks

SATURDAY, April 26 (HealthDay News) — Shiny lip balms and glosses may attract ultraviolet rays and increase the risk of skin cancer, warns a dermatologist at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas.

Dr. Christine Brown noted that protecting your lips from harmful sun rays is as important as using sunscreen to protect your skin. But a recent study found that less than 25 percent of Americans use some form of lip protection.

Lips are more susceptible than skin to aging from chronic sun damage and also more prone to developing serious cancers.

"When skin cancer occurs on the lower lip, it has the potential to be much more aggressive and metastasize to surrounding lymph nodes," Brown said in a prepared statement.

Shiny balms and glosses don't offer protection. Instead, they attract the sun's rays to the lips.

"What most people don't realize is they're actually increasing light penetration through the lip surface by applying something clear and shiny to them," Brown said.

Women should only wear glossy lipsticks in the sun when they have a layer of sun protection on underneath, dermatologists advise.

Anyone who's planning on being outdoors for more than 20 minutes at a time should use a lip sun block with an SPF of 30. Women should apply it in the morning under any lipsticks or lip glosses and then reapply the sun block throughout the day.

People should check their lips for signs of cancer. Consult a dermatologist if you notice any changes to the color of the lip surface (an area turns opaque or white), or if you have persistent peeling or flaking of a spot on your lip, Brown said.
